5 Foods for Better Hearing

The food that you eat directly influences your overall health and well-being, including the health of your ears or hearing health. When you eat a balanced diet fuels your body with rich and vital nutrients, it keeps your body healthy and functioning. In addition, it also looks after your ears by preventing potential damage and increasing your overall ear health.

There is evidence to show that when you eat a diet packed with vegetables and a range of different fruits, you can reduce the chances of hearing loss. While there is no cure and sure way to prevent hearing loss, eating right can definitely help. If you want to ensure that your body and ears remain as healthy as possible, you need to increase your intake of certain minerals and essential oils through the food that you eat.

Magnesium, zinc, folic acid, potassium and omega three are all proven to help with hearing health and prevent hearing loss.


Foods high in magnesium and vitamins A, C and E are excellent at protecting the hair cells within the inner part of your ear. Not only helping with reducing stress, but it also helps with easing hearing sensitivity. It can reduce tinnitus and help prevent hearing loss. Magnesium helps protect your eyes when surrounded by high levels of loud noises.

It works by creating a barrier and protecting the hair cells in the inner ear when surrounded by loud noises, combating the effects of free radicals that are emitted during loud noises. In addition, it can maintain nerve function and ensure that your ears benefit from a healthy blood supply. If you have a low level of magnesium, it can shrink the blood vessels within your inner ear, reducing the amount of oxygen and even causing oxygen deprivation.
Foods high in magnesium are incredibly beneficial when your ears are exposed to high noise levels. Foods that offer a high source of magnesium can be found in bananas, although other high magnesium food also includes potatoes and spinach.

Folic Acid

Folate or folic acid is an important aspect of all hearing health. Folic acid works to increase circulation throughout your body. When it comes to your ear’s health, having proper circulation ensures that your inner ear will remain healthy. By having a good circulation, the inner ear’s hair cells stay healthy and you are able to protect yourself against hearing loss.

Folate is water-soluble, so it does not remain stored within your body for long. Therefore, to optimize your ear health, you need to eat foods that contain folic acid often.

Offered in a wide range of green vegetables. Folic acid is easy to bring into your diet. Broccoli contains high levels and can be adapted into most diets. Alternative foods high in folic acid are asparagus, leafy greens, spinach, eggs and cereal.


Responsible for regulating the levels of fluid in your blood and body, potassium is vital to your ear tissues. As you age, the levels of potassium are more inclined to decrease, and therefore it is vital to ensure you are getting enough potassium-rich foods.

Evidence shows that potassium is needed to support the inner part of your ear. It is here that the ear takes noises and sounds heard and generates the electrical impulses needed to be sent to the brain for the noise to be interpreted. Milk is high in potassium. Other foods include yogurts, apricots and tomatoes.

Omega Three

Able to strengthen the blood vessels in the ear, omega three is vital to the auditory system. It is the requirement of adequate blood circulation that allows your ear to remain healthy. Seeds such as flaxseeds or chia are high in omega three.
