Whether you suspect that there is a problem with your hearing or just want to establish a baseline, booking an appointment with the audiologist is vital. Before your first hearing test, though, you will likely have a number of questions running around your mind. Finding the answers before you enter the appointment is highly advised.

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions, along with the answers that you need to know.

Do hearing tests hurt?

Short answer: No

Hearing tests are not painful, and there will be no lasting damage or irritation sustained from the various examinations and inspections.

How long do hearing tests last?

It can vary.

As a rule of thumb, a thorough hearing test lasts approximately 30 minutes. After testing is complete, the audiologist will discuss your test results in detail and answer any questions you may have. Should hearing devices be recommended, options appropriate for your needs will be discussed and a recommendation will be made. If hearing devices are fit the same day, the entire visit is typically 90 minutes.

What examinations are used during the hearing test?

Again, this can vary.

Several factors will affect your hearing profile. If hearing loss is detected, the audiologist will use a number of different tests to find out the source and severity of the issue. An advanced hearing test is comprised of: speech testing and pure tone testing to determine what sounds you can hear well and how you process speech, Middle ear testing may also be performed to ensure there is no fluid or pressure behind the ear drum, hindering your hearing abilities.

Will I need hearing aids?

A Communication Needs Assessment will be performed using the results of the hearing test, along with feedback and input from the patient. Options appropriate for the hearing loss will be discussed and a recommendation will be made that best suites the needs of the patient. Coverage for hearing tests and hearing aids can vary. Some plans cover the test and possibly a portion of the hearing aids.
